Action Alert: SB 5410 moves to House Ed Committee, YOUR voices are needed
Dear Parents,
We have reached a critical stage in Olympia. Unfortunately, on Monday the Senate passed SB 5410 by a vote of 33 - 15 with aprovision that we believe may be harmful to the future of quality online education in Washington state.
It doesn't allow enough time to develop and implement an approval process with meaningful public input. It could cause a number of existing programs to be shut down.
Clearly that would have a strong negative impact on the education of our children!
In the past, we have focused our attention on the Senate, and we believe we have had a positive impact. A number of Senators have commented about the number of calls and emails they have received from parents regarding SB 5410.
SB 5410 now moves to the Washington House of Representative's Education Committee. The House Education Committee has scheduled a public hearing for Tues, March 17th where they may consider changes to the legislation. We hope you can attend this hearing. It will be held in Hearing Room A of the John L. O’Brien Building on the Capitol campus. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00am on Tues, March 17th.
Even if you can attend the hearing, please take the time to go our Action Center and make your voice heard to the members of the House Education Committee. We have a message that we need to deliver today. SB 5410 needs to be amended to include the following change:
Move the approval process for curriculum to the 2011/2012 School year. Fourteen months isn't long enough to fully develop and implement a statewide approval process.
We are coming down to the final weeks of the legislation session. Let our legislators know how important these two amendments are to the future of our children's education.
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS TODAY!
Thank you!
