National Coalition for Public School Options Announces First Washington Pioneer of Teaching
Teachers recognized as part of National Public Charter Schools Week beginning May 4
WASHINGTON - The National Coalition for Public School Options (NCPSO), an alliance of parents working together to protect parents' rights to access the best public school options for their children, is proud to announce the first Washington Pioneer of Teaching. April Sorensen from Washington Virtual Academy has been named the Washington award winner in the national competition held to recognize top performing elementary and secondary teachers in public charter schools, magnet schools, virtual and online schools.
“NCPSO is proud to recognize these pioneering teachers who exemplify the innovative instruction and dedication which are essential tools to meet the learning needs of all types of students,” said Lori Cooney, NCPSO president and parent of a virtual academy student. “It is important to recognize the integral role teachers play in non-traditional settings as we work to protect educational options so every student has a chance to succeed.”
Ms. Sorenson is known for her exciting field trips and for taking a personal interest in each of her students. She asks students if things are working for them, and if not, she offers ideas on how to help. Ms. Sorensen says “I enjoy seeing the ‘light bulb’ come on for students when working with them over the phone and in [online learning sessions]. I am also motivated by the insight and knowledge my students pass on to me. Learning in my classroom is a two-way-street.”
Ms. Sorensen was also one of twelve state finalists selected by the NSPSO board to compete for the national award announced today as part of both National Public Charter Schools Week and National Teacher Appreciation Week. Congratulations to Jane Ferris of Pennsylvania for being selected as the national American Pioneer of Teaching. Information on this award can be found on the NCPSO website at www.publicschooloptions.org.
