Action Alert: Progress on SB 5410 and sign up for our Day at the Capitol
Thanks to your calls and letters, SB5410 has been dramatically improved. Your letters and calls helped inspire healthy discussions about the current quality of online public school programs, ways to help them work even better and improve access for to students throughout the state. The legislation no longer threatens the future of online public school programs. The changes that were made in the Education Committee on Friday morning, March 27 will require OSPI (Office of the Superintendent of Instruction) to collect additional information about all online courses and programs by the end of the year. The new SSB5410 will now be more specific about accreditation of online public school programs. OSPI will create a list of accreditation organizations after consultation with the WA Coalition for Online Learning (WaCOL). WaCOL joined us in sponsoring our Online Learning Day at the Capitol coming up April 6th.
ACTION NEEDED
*A note of thanks now to all members of the Education Committee would be thoughtful. Click here to personalize your own letter. They all supported the changes and voted “yes”. SSB5410 will go to Rules Committee next where it could be sent to the “floor” on the House for consideration of all 98 House members. IF it gets selected for consideration on the “floor”, we’ll provide an update right here. Then each of us could tell our two state representatives how valuable online public school programs are to our families as they consider their vote on SSB5410.
*A call to your two state representatives urging them to VOTE YES ON SSB 5410 AS IT CAME OUT OF THE HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE. SSB5410 now goes to the House Rules Committee and then to the “floor” on the House for consideration by all 98 House members. Making these calls now will ensure that your legislator hears from you BEFORE the vote occurs. Click here to find out who represents you in the Capital.
*Make plans to come together at the Capitol on Monday, April 6th to help more legislators see who we are and learn why we’re so passionate about online learning for our children. We want a full house as we present awards to our legislative champions. Online registration is available here . Or, just click on the 2009 Capitol Day banner.
Last year, more than 200 enjoyed the day together. This year, thanks to the WA Families for Online Learning, we have packed info bags and classy name tags so everyone on the Capitol campus can see who we are. With your help we can make an even stronger showing this year!
Congratulations, thanks and register now by clicking here so we can see you at the Capitol!
