Frequently Asked Questions

Why do thousands of families enroll their children in online public school programs?

Online programs offer innovative, individualized, highly accountable, mastery-based online learning - often with a variety of traditional hands-on instructional materials and always with a Washington certified teacher.

There are many personal reasons parents select online public school programs for their child's education (medical needs, special education, individualized instruction, difficulties in traditional classroom settings, etc). Whatever the reason, families are always seeking the best education for their child.

Who Are The Teachers?

All teachers in any online public school program across our state are required to be Washington state certified. They closely manage their students' individual learning plans to make sure their students meet all academic, accountability and attendance requirements. Initial and ongoing assessments are required.

Teachers connect with their students with regular email and phone conversations. Students and teachers often meet frequently in live online group sessions (using online tools like Elluminate) and/or class outings.

Is it "home-schooling" or a highly accountable public school program?

While many ALE (Alternative Learning Experience) online public school programs
are typically supported by a student's learning coach (often a parent, grandparent
or trusted friend), they are vastly different from what is referred to as "home-
schooling". "Homeschoolers" have no connection with state certified teachers or
state-approved curriculum.

Online public school programs in our state are required to follow all statewide assessments, reporting and accountability measures.
plus
+ School board program approval with annual review
+ Accreditation
+ Written learning plans for every student in every course
+ Documentation for every student's satisfactory progress

Beginning this September, unless an online course or school program reaching students beyond the school district's boundaries has been approved by OSPI; it will not be funded by the state. Funding for any student also ends if the district does not document "satisfactory progress" on each student's individual learning plan every month.
